There are five principles of self-determination: freedom, authority, support, responsibiltyand Confirmation.
confirmationis proof of your importance. As the "system" moves toward self-determination, it is vital that you be an example to others who want to be self-determined. One need not be fully self-determined to promote the concept. Within this process, perhaps you experience more freedom or more control or more meaningful support. The result is the first step toward self-determination!
Confirmation is within your community, both with other people with disabilities and with people who are non-disabled. You play an important role in the lives of others. Another group who need to hear your story is Legislators. Lobbying by calling and visiting Legislators is part of your role. You can educate others on how it was...how it is...and how it will be.
Know your rights and responsibilities
and get involved...whose life is it anyway?!
